Re: Adobe Air and the EULA
A commercial Air app like .telexer needs a EULA too, but there’s no way to add one to the Air installer. It seems Adobe Air isn’t quite grown up yet in that respect. original article »
I’m going through the same issue here. What path have you taken since this post? How has your experience been with using Plimus as a clearing agent? I’m considering using PayPal but liked what I read on the Plimus site.
I was surprised at how good Plimus fitted with my requirements – me picky designer – there is a lot to customize once you’re setup and have access to an admin environment. The text in the e-mail to the client, the flow of pages in the sales-funnel, how the sales form looks, the way you want to receive your payment (Paypal is possible) – all are tweakable to fit your liking.
What sharify.it offers is all stuff I built myself: a valid-user check, activation form, push app updates, track installs. I am always slightly miffed when I see people making a complete business model out of a few simple functions I’ve done myself without giving it much thought… Why didn’t *I* think of that??
Also, did you write your own code for licensing within your AIR app? I’m thinking of using the new sharify.it service, but am trying to research other options.
No, Plimus handles the generation of unique license codes and the verification of the code from within the app. It’s really simple… you make a request to their server, and you get xml back with success or error values. I spent some time on making a decent validation form, and there’s some work involved in storing the “user state” in an encrypted local store… a bit of extra work, but not hard.
Tracking app installs is something else. Currently I track user clicks on the install badge… but it would have been smarter if I had made something that tracked installs from within the app! The whole beef I had about the EULA is that some shareware sites have rules for app acceptance, specifying an app should have an EULA that is shown before the app installs. My app DID get accepted without conforming to that rule. So now there are numerous downloads from several sites, that I am not tracking… again, you could fix that easily, if you know about it and plan for it.
